In a new interview on 4Gamer (translated in the form of Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer D2R Items talked about the visual style, as well as the ways it's being used in the next games developed by the company. The interviewer was shocked that more independent games haven't started to copy that style, Asano revealed the reason being that it's pretty expensive!
"It's likely to be worth noting that it's more expensive than you'd expect. In that respect, it's an ideal match with the titles that come out of Square Enix. Remakes of Live a Live is set for release exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, and a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently in development. While the company has clearly invested in this graphic style, Asano went on to clarify that there isn't any actual "definitive book," and it will be evolving from the game's perspective.
"We haven't created anything similar to this. The way the story is told differs per title, so the HD-2D flavour is different each time. When you play Live A Live for example the mood in the prehistoric scene will differ from the sci-fi scenario.
Our options for expression have been widened by the innovative concepts we've come up with.
